Emporia, KS 66801

This one-room, limestone schoolhouse was originally located about 50 miles west of Emporia, KS, in Marion County. Constructed in 1873, it was known as Dobbs School. The school was donated as a gift to Emporia State University by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kruse of Marion in 1969 to serve as a museum and memorial to pioneer Kansas education. In order to move the structure, the school was completely dismantled and then restored stone by stone at its new location on the Emporia State University campus.  It is furnished to depict an 1895 school setting.  The National Teachers Hall of Fame Memorial to Fallen Educators, also on the Emporia State University campus, is free to visit and open 24 hours a day. The memorial commemorates educators who lost their lives while performing their professional duties. The memorial is located next to the One Room School Museum.  The Memorial to Fallen Educators was designated as a National Memorial on April 30, 2018, thanks to bills introduced by Kansas Representative Roger Marshall and Kansas Senator Jerry Moran. The Memorial is Kansas’s first national monument.
