14. THE LORD IS GREAT

     “For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods” (Psalm 96:4).  When I was quite small and not yet able to say my own prayers, I was taught before meals to recite, “God is great, God is good, now we thank Him for our food.”  While Christians must go beyond childhood repetitions in their prayers, we should never forget the fact that “God is great.”

     God is great because He is our Creator.  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).  God is also great because He is our provider.  “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:18).  And He is great because He is our Savior.  “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 2:3-4).

     Whether we say “God is great” or not, we can surely acknowledge His greatness in our prayers.  We also declare God’s greatness as we sing praises to Him.  In addition, we can talk of God’s greatness when we tell others about Him and His plan for our salvation.  And we manifest His greatness in our lives by submitting ourselves to His will.  Certainly, the greatness of God is something that we need to emphasize to our children in our homeschooling.  “Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, how great Thou art!”
