OLD SCHOOL OF THE DAY
The Morley Log Schoolhouse
Isaac Morley Farm
8605 Chillicothe Rd.
Mentor, OH 44060
Isaac Morley, one of the earliest settlers of Kirtland, OH, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1830. He invited many early converts to live on his 80-acre farm and here built a small home for Joseph and Emma Smith shortly after the Smiths’ arrival in Ohio. Joseph Smith lived on the Morley Farm from March to September 1831. Here, Emma gave birth to twins who soon died. Several days later, the Smiths adopted the infant twins of John Murdock, whose wife, Julia, died from complications of childbirth. A log schoolhouse on the property was the site of important meetings and gatherings.
The Morley family had built the log schoolhouse for their seven children and for the children of friends and neighbors living on adjoining farms. In the Morley schoolhouse, the Latter-day Saints held some of their earliest meetings in Kirtland, including the fourth conference of the Church, which convened here 3-6 June 1831. The farm is located one mile northeast of Kirtland, on Chillicothe Road. On the hill behind the house was located the small school house in use at the time of Joseph Smith. The actual location of the school was up this path.
