Franco Cesarini (b. April 18, 1961) is a Swiss composer , conductor , music educator, and flutist . Born on April 18, 1961, in Bellinzona, Ticino , Switzerland, Cesarini began his musical studies at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Milan in Italy, where he studied in the subjects of flute and piano. He completed his training at the Basel Conservatoire with Peter-Lukas Graf (flute), Felix Hauswirth (management), Robert Suter (music theory), and Jacques Wildberger (composition ). There he earned degrees in music education and concert performance, as well as conducting and composition prizes. Cesarini has won several competitions as a soloist and chamber musician, including the unanimous First Prize in the National Competition of Musical Interpretation in Switzerland of 1981. In 1984 he received a scholarship from the Foundation Ernst Göhner Migros. In 1989 he was appointed professor of management and orchestration at the Zurich Conservatory (Hochschule für Musik und Theater).
Since 1998 Cesarini has been head of the Civic Philharmonic of Lugano, the biggest orchestra of Italian speaking Switzerland, and directs the Italian Swiss Conservatory of Music in that city, where he teaches conducting and management. In 2001, the Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO, called him as a composer in residence. Also in 2001 he became a lecturer in composition at the Hoogere European Institute for Harmony and Fanfare Orchestra (ISEB) in Trento, Italy. As a composer Franco Cesarini is particularly versatile. He has composed especially for the medium of brass orchestra, but his catalog also includes compositions for chamber groups, solo instruments, voice, piano, string quartet, wind ensemble, string orchestra, and symphony orchestra. Cesarini has won several composition prizes including the Prix Pro Helvetia Swiss Foundation for Cultural Promotion. Also, he is much in demand as a member of national and international juries and guest conductor. Many of his works have been recorded and are available in compact disc.
