Are schools really safe places for our children?

Well, it’s happened AGAIN in our small community.  The article below appeared this morning (5/1/2015) on the website of WJBD radio in Salem, IL.  A similar article appeared in this morning’s edition of the Salem Times-Commoner.

Yet, in spite of this kind of thing occurring over and over and over again throughout this nation, there are still people who claim that our corrupted public education system provide schools that are safe for our children to attend and that homeschooled students are much more likely to be abused.

Balderdash!  Read this and weep:

Odin Teacher Resigns As Investigation Into Alleged Sexual Relations With Students Continues

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

An Odin High School teacher has resigned as an investigation continues on allegations she had sex with two 17-year-old male students.

Marion County State’s Attorney Matt Wilzbach told a news conference this afternoon no decision has yet been made on what if any charges will be filed.

“Both of them are 17 years of age. As a general matter in the state of Illinois, 17 is the age of consent. There is an exception though that if the other party, the adult, is in a position of trust, supervision or authority, and the law is clear that a teacher would definitely qualify for that with a student, the age of consent is 18. Based on the age, if there is sufficient evidence of sexual contact, that would be a criminal offense in the state of Illinois,” said Wilzbach.

The investigation began after one of the boys parents went to an Odin School Board member, who turned the information over to Odin School Superintendent Mike Conlon. Conlon met with the parents on Sunday. On Monday morning, the parents of the second boy came to the sheriff’s department to make a complaint. In the second case, the teacher and boy apparently had been photographed in the act of having sex.

After making the sheriff’s department report, the parents of the second boy talked to Conlon. The Superintendent followed with a hotline report to DCFS, who has been working with Sheriff’s Department Investigator Anthony Decker on the investigation.

Wilzbach says it is unclear how long the sex may have been taking place, but it apparently had occurred more than one time. “Based on the allegations we did obtain and execute some search warrants this morning, basically in an attempt to see if we could collaborate what the alleged victims were saying. I feel safe in saying that they do appear to collaborate what they were saying. The investigation is still on-going,” said Wilzbach. “Consequently no charging decisions have been made. I hope to make that in the near future after I receive the final report.”

Wilzbach says all indications are the sex was consensual, and any charges would be the result of the boys ages.

The name of the teacher is not being released because no charges have been filed at the present time.

Conlon says the teacher resigned on Sunday. She took her keys and letter of resignation to the principal’s home. Conlon has not talked to her. He said she had taught at the school eleven years and by all indications was a great teacher who had done a good job. Conlon says a substitute teacher has been assigned to the class to finish the year.

This isn’t the first time Odin School has been rocked by a teacher-student sex case. Business teacher Kelly Ebmeyer entered an alford guilty plea during the middle of his 2011 trial for criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse to a 15-year-old student and was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison.
