18. THOUGHTS TO ENCOURAGE US
by Wayne S. Walker

“The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Ps. 118:6). This verse contains three thoughts that ought to encourage us. First, “The LORD is on my side.” If we are striving to serve the Lord, we can be assured that He is on our side. “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32). God is on our side and He wants us to succeed spiritually.

Second, “I will not fear.” Sheep trust their shepherd and are not afraid of anything when being led by him because they know that he will protect them. We should trust our divine Shepherd as He leads us through life and not be afraid of the problems and difficulties that we may have to face. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). If we know that the Lord is for us and will provide for all our needs, then what is there for us to be afraid of?

Third, “What can man do to me?” Well, man can do several things to us–mock, persecute, even kill; but they can harm us only physically, not spiritually. “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). The people of this world, and sometimes even our own brethren, may mistreat us, but we have nothing to fear because God will always be there to uphold us. This statement from Psalm 118 is quoted in Hebrews 13:6 to remind us that we can always turn to our God in times of trial and tribulation for comfort and help. If we are homeschooling to bring our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, He is on our side and we have nothing to fear.
