The community of Harwood is located in Salem Twp,. fourteen miles west of Hillsboro, OH, in Highland County, at the crossroads of Highways 131 and 134. The town was established around a church named for the first minister, a Mr. Harwood. For many years the church was known as the Harwood United Church of Christ, but is now known as the Harwood Christian Church. When a post office was established, the town was also called Pulse Post Office for the nearby Pulse families. All that remains of the settlement today is the abandoned Post Office, the church, and two or three houses near the crossroads. Located a few miles east of Harwood is the now vacant Chaney College Schoolhouse. It is somewhat unusual because it is a double-doored schoolhouse with a fancy window in between the doors.
