13. HATING EVIL
by Wayne S. Walker
“You who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 97:10). Christianity is a religion of love because the God whom we worship is a God of love. God loves us, and we are to love Him with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves. However, many people think that Christianity is nothing but “just love everybody” and that’s it, most likely because they view God as a doting old grandfather type who accepts all people just as they are. This is not a Biblical picture.
Yes, God loves everyone, but there are some things that God hates too. “These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren” (Proverbs 6:16-19). God loves people, but He hates many of the things that they do and thus does not approve of them nor accept them into His fellowship.
Those who are really following God will hate the things that God hates. “Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way” (Psalm 119:104). In fact, love cannot truly exist in the absence of its opposite, because if we genuinely love something or someone, we must hate anything and everything that is in opposition to that which we love. The old adage is certainly true, “love the sinner but hate the sin”–even the garments defiled by the flesh (Jude v. 23). As homeschooling parents who are trying to bring our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, we must teach them to love the Lord AND to hate evil.
