After finishing our Gettysburg Battlefield Tour and eating lunch, we went to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, which is in a brand new building at 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA 17325 (877-874-2478; www.gettysburgfoundation.org ). We passed by the old visitors center on our tour, and it’s a shame that it’s just sitting there empty and unused.
The museum consists of twelve galleries that feature artifacts, interactive displays, and several films about the Impact of War, the Causes of War, the Approach to War, the beginning of the Civil War, the Campaign to Pennsylvania, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Aftermath of the Battle, the Gettysburg Address, the rest of the Civil War, the Results of the War, the Preservation of the Battlefield, and the Giler Lehrman Institute Special Exhibits Gallery.
In addition, there are two theaters in which Morgan Freeman narrates A New Birth of Freedom, the first part explaining the Battle of Gettysburg and the second Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Finally there is the Gettysburg Cyclorama Painting, originally displayed in 1884, which literally surrounds one with the fury of Pickett’s Charge.
